When do I need to change my tyres?

In the UK your car tyres are required to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre, if you are below this you are risking a £2,500 fine and 3 penalty points per tyre.

Tyre manufacturers will often mould tread bars into the tyres at roughly 1.6mm. If these bars are visible your tyres will soon become illegal and unsafe. JPL Garage Services along with most manufacturers recommend that you replace your tyres at a tread depth of 3mm. A tread depth of 1.6 millimetres in wet weather at 50 mph means it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop than if your tread was 3 millimetres.

Your tyre pressures should be checked at least every two weeks, and always before a long journey, when you do this you should be checking your tyres for any signs of the following:

• Cracks and Splits in the Sidewall
• Blisters and Slits
• Vibrations whilst driving
• Weird Noises

If there is evidence of any of these then it may be time to get new tyres.

The age of your tyres can be found by looking for the DOT markings on the side. These give you the week and year that your tyres were made. If any of them are over 5 years old you should consider replacing them.
